Garmin has recently added a new product in their line-up of GPD cycling computers, Edge 520. Coming as a new variant to the Edge series, it is often compared to the older Edge 500 since they are standing in about the same price class. The price of Edge 520 is higher by roughly a hundred dollars than Edge 500. So, are its features really worthy, or are insignificant that Edge 500 is already sufficient to meet all your needs?
Take a look: Garmin Edge 200 Vs 500.
The first thing that we can notice when seeing the two models side by side is that Garmin Edge 520 has a larger screen than Garmin Edge 500 despite their similar overall exterior dimensions. The display resolution on Garmin Edge 520 is also higher. Hence, you may find reading information from the Edge 520 to be somewhat easier and more convenient, especially during fast action.
Both models weigh quite identically (as the extra 1-oz on Edge 520 is rather trivial), and both have excellent IPX7 water resistance rating which means that they can withstand accidental sinking in water up to 1 meter in depth for up to 30 minutes. Simply, they can endure even the heaviest rainy weather.
They both are already equipped with extensive features, from GPS, barometric altimeter, bike speed, a bunch of performance-related features, as well as the Garmin Connect. However, Garmin Edge 500 is lacking some map functionalities available in its newer counterpart.
The Edge 520 is capable of memorizing a base map and saving up to 200 way points or important locations. A very practical feature if you love to travel around with your bike. Also, the Edge 520 comes with the auto-sync feature with Garmin Connect so that you can update your cycling data without a hindrance.
